EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
